Marine Depot

The first thing you need to know about Marine Depot is they are a fabulous company and have excellent customer service. There are a number of other online saltwater aquarium retailers that I would not recommend because they have terrible customer service and what I would call questionable practices.

Nearly all of my experiences with Marine Depot have been positive. There have been a couple of times when I ordered an item and it came damaged. This was not their fault as they package most of their items very well. Instead of having to do a FedEx or UPS claim, they took care of it and applied a credit to my account. For those of you who have never had to file a claim with a delivery company, it can be a nightmare. The process usually takes several weeks or months to be resolved, and more than half the time you do not get your money back.

Marine Depot Review

Marine Depot is based in California and I live in Minnesota. When I place my order on a Monday, it always ships out the same day and arrives on Friday. They do a good job managing their inventory, so if a product shows that it is available online, then you will almost always get it. Some other online vendors don’t actually warehouse some of their products listed on the website. So when a person like you places an order because you assume the item is available, the online vendor calls their wholesaler to check on the availability. If it’s not available, the other company will usually call you or delay shipment. The only problem is they still have your money.

Marine Depot’s website exceeds the standards of what you would expect from a company that processes online orders. They have a secure checkout that is managed by Verisign. Verisign is a leading provider of SSL Certificates and website security. In other words, your credit card and personal information is safe. I have placed over one hundred orders with Marine Depot and security has never been a concern.

The products that Marine Depot carries are usually above and beyond what you might find at your local fish specialty store. Their prices are better than most retailers and they also have a price match guarantee. So if you find a product with a lower price on a “questionable website” give Marine Depot a call and order from them instead. They also run various promotions for free shipping, so be sure to take advantage of the offer when it is available. They also won’t fill your inbox with annoying promotions if you sign up for their e-mail list.

Marine Depot Savings

One thing that I like is they carry products that have a lot of value and are popular on the major saltwater aquarium forums. Petco and Petsmart sell many products that I would call mediocre or below average. Aquarists think these products are good because they are popular, but oftentimes that is not the case. I worked for Petsmart for a couple of years and I would always order my supplies online because even with my employee discount it was still almost 30% more expensive than Marine Depot and most of the time Petsmart didn’t have the product I wanted. Marine Depot stocks higher quality products that are well reviewed by reef enthusiasts and often cost less than similar products found at big box retailers. Some of the best products to order from Marine Depot are light fixtures and protein skimmers.

As I said at the beginning of this review, Marine Depot has excellent customer service. If you have any questions you can call Marine Depot and a person that actually knows something about saltwater aquariums will answer your call.
