The first version of this skimmer was made many years ago and slight improvements have been made over the years.

This protein skimmer does work, but it does require tweaking from time to time. The average hobbyist is likely to buy the Coralife Super Skimmer because they don’t know about some of the other brands available. One thing I can say is the Coralife/Oceanic is a company that will probably be around for a long time. That means replacement parts will be readily available for years to come. The skimmer doesn’t break very often and gets pretty average reviews from other saltwater aquarists.

One thing I like about the skimmer is it can be ran externally or internally. This means you can hang it on the back of your aquarium or run it in your sump. It also uses a needle wheel pump instead of an air stone of beckett injector to produce fine microbubbles. There are also three different models for different size aquariums. They are rated for 65, 125 and 220 gallons. In my opinion, the are better rated for 30, 55 and 125 gallon aquariums respectively.
I would expect Coralife to launch a new line of protein skimmers or make an update to the original Coralife Super Skimmer line. For now there are certainly better models available for your money. They can be found at saltwater fish specialty stores or online. If you are serious about the hobby, than I would not buy a cheap protein skimmer.
